PHILIPS SOUL BOWL MASTER QUAL / YOUNG GUN FINALS
With the threat of tropical storm "Michelle" the fusion bowl held up to the destruction of the skaters. The Master's took center stage and proceeded to give the crowd a show of old and new school tricks. Local Floridian Kurt Bodenschatz brought home some bacon w/ high Indys landing him into fifth place. Last Soul Bowl contest winner Mike McGill threw the patented "McTwist" in front of a home state crowd, but lacked consistency, which placed him in 4th. Third place finisher, Lance Mountain sailed high frontside airs off the extension, while Tony Magnusson flipped and varialed into 2nd. It was Steve Caballero who out did Tony and everyone else for that matter on his first run.
Cab pulled 16 different tricks back to back, utilizing the corners and extension, and Miller flipped to qualify 1st place. This was supposed to be a qualifier for the Final on Sunday, however, the tropical storm hit and the event was rained out.
YOUNG GUNS
Only a small group of elite pros showed up, due to Sept. 11th attacks, many being scared to fly. The looming possibility of a tropical storm hung over head, nevertheless, they put on a great display of modern vertical skateboarding. Due to the small amount of entrants, the contest format was change to a jam format, with the entire event taking place on Saturday. Cookiehead Jenkins showed up right before the contest, smacked his chin, refused stitches, and came back to place a respectable 5th place. 4th place was given to a rider that fell 6 times on his first wall; however, Anthony Furlong put it together enough to take home some cash. East coast local, Phil Hajal ripped the place apart w/ technical tricks, but short rides kept him back in 3RD. It was Brain Patch & Matt Moffett who fought it out for 1st. Patch ripped the corners with experience and did hard tricks on the flat walls but he couldn't stop Matt's numerous attacks on the bowl. Matt chose a different line every ride. Long frontside tailslides up the extension and big airs just nudged him into the winners spot.
Following the bowl contests was the Best Trick contest. This best trick contest started off with the BMX'ers in the bowl doing big airs and grinds. By the time it was the skaters turn it was dark. However, Philips was thinking ahead and set up huge halogen lights. About 10 athletes participated in the competition however only three went home with money. Phil Hajal, Brian Patch and Darin "cookiehead" Jenkins walked away with first, second and third respectively due to their technical combinations and big airs. Check out the results below.
