Yeeeeeeaaaaah!
Welcome to the combo-venue
Soul Bowl and World War III
Huntington Beach, CA. August 3, 4, & 5, 2001

The $50,000 purse for this event made the stakes high as 46 skaters battled it out through the semi finals and finals to see who had the best tricks on the varried terrain. Skaters were ranked on difficulty of the trick, creativity/usage of each obstacle and execution. This was by far one of the most grueling contests in that all the skaters had to skate for an hour straight int eh hot Southern California sun ... and those that made it to the finals skated twice. Geoff Rowley placed first overall with his sick combination tricks and Chris Lambert and Chad Fernandez got second and third, both pulling their share of burly and technical tricks. Chris Cole, and Chris Haslam are two Ams that made it into the top ten and eleven year old Ryan Sheckler came in 19th. Video highlights of the event soon.

The day bagan with "Big Kahuna" Bostick getting in some surf at 7am with grey SoCal skies giving way to sun by the time the events got started. Today was a big day with three major events taking place; Masters and Young Guns finals in the Soul Bowl, and a WWIII qualifying event that lasted most of the day. And a visit from Tony Hawk at the bowl where he skated during the practice runs. Lance Mountain took first in the Masters with Tony Magnusson 2nd and Jake Piasecki 3rd. Rune Glifberg edged Christiano Mateus into second by half a point and Omar Hassan was close behind. The WWIII event consisted of 4 heats, each lasting over an hour and split five ways between the five obstacles. Geoff Rowley, Mark Appleyard and Caine Gayle made their way to the front of this massive best trick competition by showing creativity and balls on each of the obstacles. We've had a n impressive group of ams here at the WWIII arena too. Check out the photo page for more.

The white tents and booming bass were visible and audible even from a mile away through the haze as we descended upon the venue yesterday at Huntington Beach Pier in Huntington Beach, CA. The practice runs on the WW3 street course have been super sick with the top ams and pros going big for the crowds and for their friends. The setup is sick, thanks to Mr. Duncan, and reflects the wishes of the skaters for a more street-oriented course with lots of levels rails and banks and not one quarterpipe to be found. The first round of the Soul Bowl Masters event went on today with riders like Mike McGill and Jeff Grosso getting burly in the bowl. Tomorrow will kick off the first scored runs on the WWIII street course and the finals for the Masters and Young Guns in the Soul Bowl event. More photos and words tomorrow...
