Dennis Martin

Dennis Martin
Born; 10/14/71, Yonkers, NY.
Hometown; New Orleans, LA.

Dennis started skating in December of 1984 when a kid in his neighborhood got a Madrid "Mike Smith" for Christmas. He had began to notice a couple of kids in school also had these gigantic skateboards, that's where it all began he had to have one. After skating around town for six months he and his friends built a quarter pipe and then came a half pipe. A few months later he learned of a contest being held in Mobile Alabama to be judged by Tony Hawk and Jeff Phillips. One of his older friends had a car so off they went, Dennis placed first in his class and received a sponsor from the shop (Hot Tropics) that was holding the contest. After that he often went to contests in Florida, Alabama and Mississippi. In 1987 he ventured west to Texas where he met Mike Crum, Chris Gentry, and a hand full of Texas skaters. One day in 1989 as he was visiting Houston he decided to move there, so he went back to New Orleans gathered up his clothes and 20 dollars his dad gave him. At the time he moved to Houston the S.P.O.H. owner Dennis Epinett was building a new pro shop so he scored a job building that and soon after worked and lived at the skatepark. A few months later he picked up his first sponsor with H-STREET skateboards. After going on tour with H-STREET he picked up a few other sponsors (Gullwing, VSW, Cockroach and Gouge) and begin to enter the N.S.A. contests where he made it to the finals in Reno. Later that year he entered S.U.A.S. an annual contest held at the S.P.O.H. he placed second in vert to Neil Hendrix. Later that year Ron Allen started a new company off of H-STREET so he switched sponsors to Life Skateboards. A few months later he got an offer to work at Jeff Phillips (R.I.P) skatepark in Dallas so just as easy as he moved to Houston he moved to Dallas. After living in Dallas for a few years he moved to Las Vegas in 1994 to perform in a show at Wet and Wild on the strip. After that he went back to Dallas to work construction starting a remodeling company with his friends Craig Johnson and Tracy Weller. In 1997 he was offered a job doing a show at Sea World in San Antonio, Texas so he said the hell with hard labor and moved to San Antonio for six months. That same summer he won the Vans Warped Tour amateur contest in Houston, Texas. Immediately following that he packed up his car and once again headed west for California, where he now lives in Huntington Beach. He now works at Digital Skateboarding ironically owned by Mike Crum and also freelances between doing demo’s with GT bikes and Judging contests for World Cup Skateboarding.
