Sunday May 6th, 2001

Slam City Jam #8 is complete. Ladies competed today and the most amazing street run I have ever seen in a ladies contest was thrown down by Vannesa Torres. Also ripping for second place was Stefanie Thomas and third went to Jaime Reyes.

Ladies Vert was equally impressive with Jen O'Brien busting out some amazing lines to take first place with Candy Hiler and Jodie MacDonald taking second and third.

Mens vert finals was incredible, highlighted by Bob Burnquist's best ever contest run score of 99! Not to be overshadowed, Rune Glifberg managed a very respectable third run score of 92.3 to take second place and Bucky Lasek grabbed third with his first run score of 89. Paul Zitzer earned the Vert X Games and Gravity Games spots with his 6th place finish.

Street finals was super exciting as well with 20 skaters fighting for the top spot. Rick McCrank looked like he might take the win with his first run score of 90.3 but ended up in 3rd place behind newcomer Colt Cannon who also looked locked in to win for a while. The best run of the day though, came from Eric Koston with a score of 95 to nudge Colt down to second place. Colt Cannon earned the Street X Games and Gravity Games spots.

Day 2: Street Semi Finals

After 10 hours of hardcore skateboarding insanity with nearly all the premier skateboarding stars in attendance we narrowed the field from 80 to 20 in the street semi finals. The competition was fierce as it was in the prelims. Colt Cannon managed to skate his way into the finals, continuing in his quest for the skateboardings holy grail. Flip Skateboards Mark Appleyard's final run of the evening was highlighted by highly technical tricks like a nollie flip to nose slide, qualifying him in first place for tomorrows finals. Today's skating was so incredible it's anyone's guess as to who will win but Eric Kirkwood says his money is on Chris Senn.

Vert

The man of the day was, without a doubt, Flip rider Rune Glifberg. His runs started off strong with gigantic airs and he flawlessly executed a large bag of technical lip tricks as well as soaring head high on each and every air. Rune qualified first for his efforts. Other notables were Bucky Lasek with switch 540 rodeo's and Matt Dove rode as well as he has ever ridden in a contest qualifying 6th.

Tomorrow is Vert and Street finals and girls vert and street as well. Check back tomorrow night for results.

Street Qualifying Day

Cinderella story Colt Cannon, qualified first to take home a cold, hard thousand in cash. Colt's flawless runs were riddled with tricks like kickflip frontside boardslides and bionic kickflips. Other notable skaters included Chad Bartie and Ronnie Creager. The top 43 skaters from todays qualifying will meet the 37 pre qualified skaters from world rankings to compete in tomorrows semi finals. Vert prelims are tomorrow night as well and should be pretty heated with pretty much all the big boys here including Rune, Bob and Bucky who were all absent at the last WCS event in Louisville.

Results are posted from the street qualifying rounds today and street semis and vert prelims will be posted tomorrow night.

There is a brand new skatepark less than a block from the contest venue that is one of the nicest I've ever seen. Everyone was skating it the last couple days and all I heard were positive comments about the park. Thursday's Bowl Bash was a great session with Ultimate and Vans BBQing in the parking lot and guys like Tim McDougall, Tony Tujillo, Renton Millar and others killing it with unique lines through the bowls. Bill Weis tried a few 540's in the deep bowl, with no pads or helmet, see the photos page for more...
